CPD plan template
A continuing professional development plan is a short document that answers four questions: what do I need to be better at, what will I do about it, how will I know, and what evidence will I have. This template asks those questions in a form you can fill in for yourself or for a team.
No credit card required. Free plan available.
How to use this template
Copy the sections below into any document. Fill in one row per development goal — three to five is plenty for a year. For each goal, name the activities (a course, a session, reading, practice, shadowing), the evidence you will keep (a certificate, an assessment result, a reflection, a piece of work) and a review date.
If your professional body specifies hours or categories, add a column for them. If it asks for reflection, the "what changed" column at the end is where it goes. The template is deliberately plain so it fits whatever your body requires rather than inventing its own scheme.

Everything in square brackets is yours to replace.
1. Who this plan is for
| Field | Your entry |
|---|---|
| Name | [Name] |
| Role | [Role and team] |
| Period covered | [e.g. September 2026 – August 2027] |
| Professional body or framework | [e.g. Teachers' Standards; CIPD; NMC revalidation; none] |
| Line manager or mentor | [Name] |
| Date agreed | [Date] |
2. Where I am now
Two or three sentences, honest rather than polished. What is going well, what is harder than it should be, what has changed in the role or the guidance since the last plan.
- [Strength to build on]
- [Area that needs development]
- [Change in role, guidance or context this year]
3. Development goals
One row per goal. Write the goal as an outcome ("lead a moderation meeting confidently"), not an activity ("attend moderation training").
| Goal | Why it matters | Activities | Evidence I will keep | Target date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Goal 1] | [Link to role, appraisal or standard] | [Session / course / reading / practice] | [Certificate, assessment result, work sample, reflection] | [Date] |
| [Goal 2] | ||||
| [Goal 3] |
4. Activity log
Add a row each time an activity happens. This is the part a professional body usually asks to see.
| Date | Activity | Type | Duration | Goal it supports | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Date] | [e.g. Safeguarding update] | [Event / course / reading / practice / other] | [e.g. 2 hours] | [Goal 1] | [Certificate link] |
5. Review
Complete at the mid-point and at the end of the period.
| Review date | Progress against goals | What changed in my practice | Next steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Mid-year] | |||
| [End of year] |
Select the template above and paste it into any document. Square-bracketed text is yours to replace.
Running the plan in Learner Journey
- 1
Sessions become events
Publish each live activity as an event. Registration, check-in and an attendance certificate give you the evidence row automatically.
- 2
Courses become learning paths
Assign the self-paced activities as learning paths with a target date; completion is recorded.
- 3
Assessments close the goal
Put a quiz or an outcome-based assessment at the end of a path so the evidence is a result, not a scroll.
- 4
Certificates are the evidence
Each pass or attendance issues a certificate with a public verification link — paste it into the log.
- 5
The record keeps itself
Your progress page lists every path, result and certificate; a manager sees completion in the compliance report.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the template record CPD hours?
- There is a duration column in the activity log. Learner Journey records the activities and certificates rather than totalling hours; state hours on certificates and export the log if your body needs a total.
- Can I use this for a whole team?
- Yes — one plan per person, or use the staff training plan template for the organisation-level view.
- Is there a downloadable version?
- Copy the page into any document. We do not host a PDF: the template is deliberately plain text and tables so it pastes cleanly.
