What professional development needs that an LMS was not built for
Events with attendance. Most CPD is delivered live, and an LMS typically treats a live session as a calendar entry ("ILT") rather than a registered, ticketed, checked-in event with certificates.
Evidence, not just completion. A certificate that a third party can verify; a report that shows overdue and stale, not only complete; an audit trail of reminders.
Practice. Development sticks when people rehearse — a difficult conversation, a presentation — and get feedback, which a content player cannot give.
Content that keeps up. Programmes drift out of date; regenerating a module from the revised guidance should take an afternoon, not a quarter.
The categories of alternative
Conventional SMB LMSs (TalentLMS, iSpring Learn, Absorb and similar) are the safe choice when you have SCORM content, need SSO and enterprise integration, and your development is mostly self-paced courses. They are strong on standards and reporting and weaker on live events and practice.
Course-selling platforms (Thinkific, LearnWorlds, Kajabi and similar) are built for creators selling to the public: storefronts, checkouts and communities. They are the wrong shape for staff or member development with due dates and evidence.
Learner Journey is a third shape: an AI-first learning platform with events, bookings, coaching practice and verifiable certificates built in, with the LMS essentials — learning paths, cohorts, due dates, compliance reporting, assessments, SCORM export — underneath. It is not a SCORM player and does not have SAML SSO yet, so it is the wrong choice where those are mandatory.

When a conventional LMS is the right answer
You have a SCORM or xAPI library you cannot rebuild. Single sign-on with your identity provider is non-negotiable. Your development is overwhelmingly self-paced courses with standard completion reporting, and integration with HR systems matters more than events or AI. In that case choose a mature LMS and use Learner Journey for nothing — or only for events.
When Learner Journey is the right answer
Your development programme mixes live sessions with online follow-up and you need attendance, certificates and completion on one record. You want AI to draft the content and a tutor to support learners. You want practice with feedback, not just content. You are a school, a trust, a membership body or a team without an LMS administrator, and starting free matters.

- It covers what most organisations use an LMS for — learning paths, assessments, certificates, cohorts, due dates and completion reporting — and adds events, bookings, AI generation, an AI tutor and coaching. It does not import SCORM or provide xAPI, so it is not a drop-in replacement for an LMS whose value is standards compliance.
- Can I keep my LMS and use Learner Journey for events?
- Yes. The events module works on its own: registration, tickets or invoices, check-in and attendance certificates, with attendee lists exported to CSV.
