    Learner Journey vs WordPress

WordPress is the most flexible way to build a website there is: free software you host yourself, or WordPress.com plans from £3 a month, 60,000+ plugins, any theme, any design. A learning site on WordPress means adding an LMS plugin, a payment plugin, an events plugin and a certificate plugin, and keeping them all working together. Learner Journey is a learning platform that also builds your website — the courses, events and certificates are the platform, and the site is generated around them.

Assembling a learning site versus starting with one

WordPress gives you a publishing platform and a plugin ecosystem. To turn it into a learning site you choose an LMS plugin (LearnDash, LifterLMS, Tutor LMS and others, each with its own licence), a payment gateway plugin, an events or booking plugin, a certificate add-on, a membership plugin if access must be gated, and a theme that gets on with all of them. Then you host it, back it up, update it, and keep the plugins compatible with each other and with the next WordPress release. WordPress.com's managed plans — Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce — take the hosting and updates off you; on the page checked, plugin installation is listed on every paid plan, and payment buttons from Premium. The result can be anything you can imagine, and it is yours.

Learner Journey starts from the learning. A workspace already has AI-generated courses, learning paths with due dates and a compliance report, quizzes and assessments, certificates with a public verification page, events with registration, tickets or invoices, check-in and attendance certificates, bookings, an AI tutor and a members' timeline. The AI website builder then generates a branded public site — on a Learner Journey subdomain or your own domain — that features your real courses, events and podcasts rather than placeholder text. There is nothing to host, patch or reconcile. There is also no plugin ecosystem: if it is not in Learner Journey, you cannot add it.

When WordPress is the better choice

The website is the product and the learning is one section of it: you need a blog, a newsletter, SEO tooling and a design that is exactly yours. You have a developer, or you enjoy being one, and you want the freedom to add anything from 60,000 plugins. You already run WordPress and adding an LMS plugin is less disruptive than adding a platform. You need a feature Learner Journey does not have and a plugin does.

When Learner Journey is the better choice

The learning is the product and the website is the front door. You would rather not choose, licence, configure and maintain five plugins to get courses, payments, events, certificates and membership working together. You want AI to draft the courses and an AI tutor to answer learners. Your events need registration, invoices, check-in and attendance certificates on the learner's record. You want a branded site generated from what you already have, live this afternoon, with nothing to update.

What we checked on WordPress.com's site — 20 September 2026

    • WordPress.com lists a free plan and Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce plans. At the time of writing the UK prices shown for annual billing were £3, £7, £20 and £36 per month for the first year, auto-renewing at £7, £16, £35 and £62 per month; an Enterprise tier is by contact. The WordPress software itself is free and open source to self-host.
    • Every paid plan is listed with unlimited pages, posts, users and visitors, a free domain for one year, no ads, a guided AI website builder and installation of plugins from a marketplace of over 60,000. Premium adds payment buttons with PayPal and Stripe and video uploads; Business adds a built-in AI site assistant, email marketing to 500 subscribers, backups and developer access; Commerce adds WooCommerce.
    • An LMS is not part of WordPress or WordPress.com plans; learning features come from third-party plugins, each with its own licence and support.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my WordPress site and use Learner Journey for the learning?
Yes; this is common. Keep WordPress for the blog and marketing, link to your Learner Journey workspace for courses and events, and embed event registration on your WordPress pages. There is no plugin or single sign-on between them.
Can I move a WordPress LMS site to Learner Journey?
Not automatically. Bring the course material — documents, slides, video — into a workspace and let the AI course creator draft it, then edit. Learner records and certificates from the old site do not transfer.
Can I edit the generated website?
Yes: pages, sections, images and copy are editable, and the site rebuilds itself when your courses, events and podcasts change. You cannot add custom code, themes or plugins.
Does Learner Journey have a blog?
Workspaces have public pages and a timeline of posts, and the generated site can include news. It is not a blogging platform in the WordPress sense — no categories, tags, RSS for posts, or comment moderation.
What does Learner Journey not do?
It does not import or play third-party SCORM packages (it exports them), has no xAPI/LRS, offers email/password and Google sign-in only (no SAML or Microsoft SSO yet), supports one ticket price per event, and has no direct CRM or membership-database integration. If any of those is essential, say so on a demo and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
