A plugin you run versus a platform that runs
LearnDash's plans are Essentials ($259 a year: course builder, quiz builder with eight question types, memberships, subscriptions and bundles via MemberDash, Stripe and PayPal, video progression, certificate builder, achievements), Pro ($399: AI course outline and quiz builder, advanced reporting and enrolment tracking, weighted grading, custom report cards, student notes) and Elite ($599: group course management, instructor role, front-end course creation, multi-instructor courses, ratings and reviews, selling seats to organisations). One licence, unlimited courses, unlimited learners, no per-student fees. It integrates with WooCommerce, Elementor, Events Calendar, Gravity Forms, bbPress and the membership plugins. What it does not include is WordPress itself: hosting, a theme, backups, updates, security and the compatibility of every other plugin on the site are yours.
Learner Journey is the hosted alternative: nothing to install, patch or back up. AI drafts the courses, quizzes and assessments from your material and can generate slides and podcasts too; learning paths carry due dates, cohorts and a compliance report; certificates verify from a public link; events take registration, tickets or invoices, member-free places, check-in and attendance certificates; bookings, an AI tutor and AI coaches are built in; an AI website builder generates the public site. It cannot be extended with plugins, does not run on your server, has no gradebook with weighted grading, no assignment submissions, no seat-selling to organisations and no reviews.

When LearnDash is the better choice
You already run WordPress and want the LMS inside it, on your server, under your control, extended by any plugin you like. You need a gradebook with weighted grading, assignment submissions, group leaders and seat-based selling to organisations. You have someone who looks after the site — or you enjoy doing it — and a flat annual licence with unlimited learners beats a monthly platform for your numbers.
When Learner Journey is the better choice
You do not want to run a WordPress site to run a course. You want AI to draft the content and an AI tutor to support learners, on every plan. Your programme includes live events with registration, invoices, check-in and attendance certificates, or bookings, or spoken practice — on the same learner record as the courses. You want certificates that verify from a public link and a branded site generated for you, free to start and with nothing to maintain.

- Can I move my LearnDash courses to Learner Journey?
- Not automatically, and not as SCORM. Bring the course material — documents, video, slides — into a workspace and let the AI course creator draft it, then edit. Learner records, certificates and subscriptions from the WordPress site do not transfer.
- Does Learner Journey have a gradebook or assignments?
- No. Quizzes are scored, assessments are outcome-based with pass marks, and the compliance report shows completion; there are no graded assignment submissions, weighted grades or report cards.
- Can I sell seats to an organisation?
- Not as a seat bundle. An organisation can be invoiced for event places, and members can be added to a cohort by hand or by listed email domain; there is no group-leader role or seat-based checkout.
- How does the cost compare?
- LearnDash is $259 to $599 a year plus whatever your WordPress hosting, theme and other plugins cost. Learner Journey is free, or £10 or £50 a month, with hosting and the website included. Which is cheaper depends on what your WordPress site already costs you.
- What does Learner Journey not do?
- It does not import or play third-party SCORM packages (it exports them), has no xAPI/LRS, offers email/password and Google sign-in only (no SAML or Microsoft SSO yet), supports one ticket price per event, and has no direct CRM or membership-database integration. If any of those is essential, say so on a demo and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
