Teaching students versus training staff
Canvas is built for the classroom relationship: an instructor, a cohort of students, assignments submitted and graded, a gradebook that feeds the student information system, discussions, quizzes, accessibility tooling and an open integration standard (LTI) that lets a thousand tools plug in. Its tiers add Studio interactive video, Impact engagement messaging and advanced analytics on Plus, and IgniteAI agents, "Ask Your Data" and study tools on Next. It is procured by the institution on a contract, priced on request.
Learner Journey is built for the training relationship: an organisation, the people it is responsible for developing, and the evidence it must keep. AI drafts courses, quizzes and assessments from your policies and materials; learning paths carry due dates and a compliance report; certificates verify from a public link; events — INSET days, twilight CPD, parent workshops, open evenings — take registration, check-in and attendance certificates; an AI tutor answers staff from the school's own documents. It has no gradebook, no assignments with submissions, no LTI and no student information system integration.

When Canvas is the better choice
You are a university, college or school district and the job is teaching: assignments, grading, a gradebook that feeds your student records, LTI tools, accessibility compliance and a mobile app your students already have. Nothing on this page should suggest replacing Canvas for that. If the question is which LMS to run your courses on, Canvas is one of the answers and Learner Journey is not.
When Learner Journey is the better choice
The learning is for staff, not students: safeguarding and mandatory training with a compliance report, teacher CPD with certificates, INSET and twilight sessions with registration and attendance, an AI tutor that answers from the school's own policies. Or you are not an institution — a trust central team, a professional body, a training provider — and Canvas is the wrong shape and the wrong procurement. You want to start free this week.

Frequently asked questions
- Can a school use Canvas for students and Learner Journey for staff?
- Yes; that is the common pattern. There is no integration between them — staff sign in to Learner Journey separately (Google sign-in works with Google Workspace for Education accounts) and the two systems keep separate records.
- Does Learner Journey have a gradebook?
- No. Assessments have pass marks and outcomes, quizzes are scored, and the compliance report shows completion; there are no graded assignments with submissions and no marks that flow to a student information system.
- Does Learner Journey support LTI?
- No. It exports SCORM for use in an LMS, but has no LTI launch and no LTI tool support.
- What does Learner Journey not do?
- It does not import or play third-party SCORM packages (it exports them), has no xAPI/LRS, offers email/password and Google sign-in only (no SAML or Microsoft SSO yet), supports one ticket price per event, and has no direct CRM or membership-database integration. If any of those is essential, say so on a demo and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
