Institutional platform versus team platform
Brightspace is procured by an institution and configured for it: courses and content authoring, personalised learning that adapts to performance, competency-based education, analytics and data hubs, integration with the student information system and other EdTech through D2L Link, and a storefront (Course Merchant) so outsiders can browse, buy and self-enrol. Its add-ons extend that — Lumi for AI assistance, Creator+ for interactive content, Achievement+ for outcomes dashboards, Performance+ for insight. D2L sells to higher education, K-12, training organisations, associations, business and government, with migration and professional services. No prices are published.
Learner Journey is picked up by a team: a trust's CPD lead, an association's education officer, a training provider, a school's safeguarding lead. AI drafts the courses, quizzes, assessments and slides from your material; learning paths carry due dates and a compliance report; certificates verify from a public link; events take registration, tickets or invoices, check-in and attendance certificates; an AI tutor answers learners from your content. It has no student information system integration, no LTI, no competency framework, no data hub and no professional services.

When Brightspace is the better choice
You are an institution — a university, a college, a school board, a large association or a government department — procuring a platform for everyone, with a student information system to integrate, competency frameworks to report against, LTI tools to plug in, SCORM content to host, single sign-on and a services team to migrate you. Brightspace is built for that and Learner Journey is not.
When Learner Journey is the better choice
You are a team inside an institution — CPD, safeguarding, staff development — or an organisation too small to procure an institutional LMS: a trust central team, a professional body's education arm, a training provider. Your learning includes events people register for, with attendance and certificates. You want AI to draft the content and a tutor to support learners. You want to start free this week and pay a monthly subscription, and you can live without SIS integration, LTI and SCORM import.

Frequently asked questions
- Can Learner Journey sell courses like Course Merchant?
- Learning paths can be sold as one-off purchases or subscriptions and events as tickets, through your own Stripe account, from the workspace's public site. It is simpler than a dedicated storefront: no catalogue browsing across departments, no bundles.
- Does Learner Journey do competency-based education?
- Assessments are outcome-based — you define what a learner must demonstrate and assess against it — and certificates can record it. There is no institution-wide competency framework or outcomes dashboard across programmes.
- Can I move my Brightspace courses across?
- Not as SCORM or a course package — Learner Journey does not import either. Bring the source material into a workspace and regenerate with the AI course creator, then edit.
- What does Learner Journey not do?
- It does not import or play third-party SCORM packages (it exports them), has no xAPI/LRS, offers email/password and Google sign-in only (no SAML or Microsoft SSO yet), supports one ticket price per event, and has no direct CRM or membership-database integration. If any of those is essential, say so on a demo and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
