An authoring suite versus a learning platform
Articulate 360 is priced per author seat — $1,749 per seat per year at the time of writing — and learners are not the unit. The value is in Storyline's depth (branching, variables, triggers, custom interactions), Rise's speed, a 20-million-asset library, stakeholder review, and clean SCORM, xAPI and cmi5 output that runs in whatever LMS the organisation already has. Reach, its integrated LMS, and an AI tutor are included; translation, AI avatars and Frontline's training kits run on separately purchased credits. A Frontline plan for non-designers starts at $500 a year for unlimited seats.
Learner Journey is where learning happens rather than where it is authored: AI drafts the course from your material, you edit it in a browser, and the same workspace runs learning paths with due dates, assessments, certificates with public verification, events with check-in and attendance certificates, bookings, an AI tutor and a compliance report. It exports SCORM but does not import it, and it has nothing like Storyline for building custom interactions.

When Articulate 360 is the better choice
You employ instructional designers and the course itself is the craft — branching scenarios, custom interactions, precise control over every screen. Your courses must run in an LMS you already have, as SCORM, xAPI or cmi5. You need stakeholder review baked into the workflow, translation into dozens of languages, or AI presenter videos. You need SAML SSO, enterprise security review and a dedicated success manager. Per-seat pricing is fine because a small team authors for a large workforce.
When Learner Journey is the better choice
Nobody on the team is an instructional designer, and the people who know the subject need to produce and run the training themselves. The programme mixes online modules with live sessions and you need attendance, certificates and completion on one learner record. Learners need help from an AI tutor that knows your content and their progress, or practice with an AI coach. You want a free plan and a monthly price rather than an annual per-seat licence. You are a school, a trust, a membership body or a small team without an existing LMS.

- Can I use Articulate 360 and Learner Journey together?
- Not well, at the moment: Learner Journey does not import SCORM, so a Storyline or Rise course cannot be dropped into it. If you author in Articulate, host in Reach or your LMS. Learner Journey could still run the events, bookings and AI tutor alongside.
- Is Learner Journey an authoring tool?
- Only in the sense that AI drafts courses, quizzes, assessments, slides and podcast episodes from your material and you edit them in the browser. There is no timeline, triggers or variables — nothing like Storyline — and no cmi5 or xAPI output.
- How does pricing compare?
- They are priced on different units. Articulate 360 AI is $1,749 per author seat per year at the time of writing, with credits for advanced AI on top; Learner Journey is free, or £10 or £50 per month, and does not charge per admin. For a team of one designer and a thousand learners, the maths favours Articulate less than it looks; for a team of ten subject experts, it favours Learner Journey a lot.
- Is Learner Journey an Articulate Rise alternative?
- For responsive, browser-built courses that AI drafts from source material, yes. For anything that needs Rise's block-level design control or must publish as SCORM into another LMS, Rise is the right tool.
- What does Learner Journey not do?
- It does not import or play third-party SCORM packages (it exports them), has no xAPI/LRS, offers email/password and Google sign-in only (no SAML or Microsoft SSO yet), supports one ticket price per event, and has no direct CRM or membership-database integration. If any of those is essential, say so on a demo and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
